[ music | department of eagles - no one does it like you ]

week in review: [ 10/31/07 - 11/5/07 ]

- tuesday i had a job interview at a printing company. it went alright, not really what i want to do, but i do need something so we'll see what happens.
- wednesday i saw the darjeeling limited with tom. i enjoyed it. went to fox and hound later with some friends.
- thursday i painted the hallway closet that was never done 2 summers ago.
- friday i finally got my studio back up and running on an old desktop that was in my garage w/ windows 2000. 4 songs down, many more to come.
- saturday i saw broken social scene at the metro. they played for 2.5 hours which was pretty crazy, however i did feel there was a little too much conversation. still good though.
- sunday i went to the memorial service for my aunt's brother and spent time with family.
- today i went grocery shopping with my mom. i also just won a snare drum on ebay. my first purchase for the simple, grizzly bearish drum kit that i'm putting together.

[ music | wilco - shake it off ]

i want so many instruments.

for christmas i am asking for a clarinet and a soprano ukulele. however i already want to buy a tenor uke and start to work on a simple drum set. i've been looking up stuff all day. basically i just want a snare, floor tom, hi-hat, and a ride, possibly a crash as well. but then you need to add hardware (stands and throne). so pretty much this would cost me around $500-$600. which isn't so bad, but bad when you have no job. the uke would cost around $100 as well. i also want a nord, which is around $1500, however i did find one on craigslist today for $500. ahh. i also eventually want a saxophone, bass guitar/amp, harmonium, and more guitars. definitely need to start making some money. i do have an interview tomorrow, so let's see if that works out. this past weekend was pretty fun. ok that's about it.

weird stuff about the new radiohead album:

- in rainbows = 10 letters
- album came out on 10/10
- word on the album came 10 days before it came out
- 10 years since OK Computer came out

i think there is more, but i am drawing a blank.

[ music | radiohead - jigsaw falling into place ]

welp i got the new radiohead lastnight. didn't pay anything for it, but i do plan to buy the package when it comes out. anyways, intially i wasn't blow. i thought it was good, but just good. the first track that i really started liking is "jigsaw falling into place." now after a few listens it is growing on me, just like wilco. i thought wilco was good, but since i'd heard half the songs live already, it was just like oh, this is what the studio versions sound like. nothing exceptional, but good. but man oh man, after a few listens, both are by far the best 2 albums of the year, in my opinion.

i'm seeing grizzly bear and beach house tonight. not really that into going cause i watched a whole live set of grizzly bear from a few weeks ago, so i know what to expect, but i'm sure it'll be good, plus there will be attractive women there that i probably won't talk to.

welp that's about that.

[ music | colleen - i'll read you a story ]

so my new current obsession is music boxes.

i saw beirut lastnight at the portage theater. pretty cool place. alaska in winter and colleen opened. alaska in winter reminded me of daft punk, but apparently zach from beirut used to be in it. anyways, colleen aka Cécile Schott sort of blew me away, plus i think i'm in love. a. she's french b. she plays music c. she's plays a lot of instruments. so yeah she used a music box on one of her songs and looped it/reversed it and it was amazing. you should check her out. good relaxing stuff. i downloaded all of her albums lastnight. so back to the music boxes. i ordered one lastnight and just found out from my mother that she has two, so i'm going to experiment today with some songs. yep yep. that's about it. the cubs are blowing it. oh and i'm playing at the beat kitchen soon. cool.

let's see, well the show at schubas went well. joshua james is a good man. listen to his music. today i was asked to play at the metro in december. let's see if that works out. if it does, it would be pretty amazing. i just confirmed a show with rue royale at uncommon ground in november. that should be sweet. need to line up some more though. a website is possibly in the works. i need to look for a job. i need money. i want things. like a car. so i can get around. welp that is all. for now.

[ music | beirut - nantes ]

wow, so it has been awhile. nothing too exciting going on in this life. i worked over the summer. just finished about 2 weeks ago. need to find something new 'cause money is needed. i've played a few shows over the summer. played my first show at schubas which was pretty sweet. i'm actually playing there again this coming monday with joshua james. should be a good time. i am still getting low turnouts at shows though. major bummer, but i figure it is all part of the process. in time. i have also been to a few shows in the last few months. feist, grizzly bear, wilco, rocky votolato, okkervil river, damien jurado, ferraby lionheart, joshua james, etc. just to name a few. i'm also seeing beirut, grizzly bear, beach house, and broken social scene plays kevin drew spirit if, in the next few weeks. should be pretty sweet. i went to a few cubs games in august and september. went to a bears pre-season game. going to a brewers game tomorrow wearing cubs gear. let's see, other than that, i've just seen a few movies, played some baseball, haven't talked to pretty girls i have seen at shows, worked on a few new songs that i can't seem to finish and record, etc. welp that's about it. hope all is well.

welp my computer died. i lost a lot, but i guess it's not the end of the world, however i was basically without a computer for almost 2 weeks, which was pretty rough, but i finally got a new one this weekend. this one to be exact:

i kind of wanted a mac, but wouldn't have been able to use a few key programs and it would've been a little more expensive. oh well, i'll get one next time. other than that, i've just been working, working out, being tired, went to minoqua for memorial day. i also have about 6 songs that i've been working on for a few weeks. for some reason i just can't put finishing touches on them, hopefully sometime this week i can get around to it.

looking forward to some shows in june: apostle of hustle, julie doiron, page france, great lake swimmers, feist, grizzly bear, one black tooth, and possibly more . need to start booking myself some shows. need to get a car. ok that is all, i'm tired.

[ music | muse - map of the problematique ]

hello. i am in a muse mood right now. i saw disturbia yesterday, i liked it. i've been listening to julie doiron a lot lately. she's coming to the south union arts in june and i tried to get on the bill, but apparently the headliner doesn't want anyone else. i'm also working on opening for page france at the beat kitchen or as tall as lions at the subterrean. haven't heard anything yet. i'm playing a free show in naperville next thursday, at ronnys bar on the 24th, and i was asked to play on the 10th, but haven't heard anything back for that. i have two new songs on banjo that still need a little work and would like to write one or two more before i record them. i have been waking up early the was week or so. it's kind of nice, but the days still seem to fly by. i also started running outside. it's kind of nice as well, but man have i lost my endurance. no good. i'm trying to keep a new schedule of working out. so far so good. my grandparents were in town recently. it was good to see them/spend time with them. welp that's about all for now.

eh, not too much to report. went to the cubs game yesterday. sat in the bleachers for the first time and we had front row, which was cool, however as much as i love wrigley, i think i prefer watching games on tv. you just can't pay close attention, it's like a f-ing party, which really isn't my thing, plus people annoy me too much and i got like 5 beers spilled on me, not cool. i'm taking care of the kap's new pup during the day while they're at work, cause i still have no job. basically just take it out and play with it for a bit. unfortunately it goes to the bathroom in the house and i have to clean it up. gross. my grandparents and mom's aunt are coming into town tomorrow for a week. i have to sleep on the couch, bummer, but oh well, it will be good to see them and spend time with them. it's terrible with what happend at virginia tech today. i can't believe somene could actually think to do something like that. i think i might be able to start up at my old summer job in like 2 weeks. wasn't really thinking i'd be going back to it, but it's not that bad of a gig, plus the money is pretty decent. welp i think that's all to report right now.

i want to meet a girl like this. i think i know one who is close, but she's not close.

in other news, i shaved my beard off and cut my hair. i got the urge. the cold breeze feels so good on my face. also i forgot to mention that i won the first annual cover a french kicks song contest. pretty crazy, let's see what kind of goodies i get. today is st. patricks day. can't wait to eat cornbeef and cabbage later and hang with family, especially my new baby cousin. i like babies. i need to find a job. luckily i got my federal tax return back, that helps a little.

wow, i seriously might move out to california, and soon. i'm currently talking to my friend darrick and he could probably get me a job at his construction company and says i could crash at his place. he's making more the 45k a year and goes surfing everyday. he lives in malibu by the way. man this is definitely something i should do. i need a change. i'm just worried about not having a car and no money. i could probably sell my mesa boogie and so other odds and ends. fuck, i really should do this. as darrick is saying, i have nothing to lose and he's right.

now i think i'm going to fly out to LAX in 2 weeks to check it out for a weekend. then possibly buy a car and drive out there.

[ music | limbeck - trouble ]

i kind of miss school, not really school, but just living on my own and walking around, like walking to my job at night with nice weather, my kind of weather, like low 60's with a slight breeze. man i can't wait for a night like that. i watched the departed yesterday, it was good, i didn't like it at first, but loved it by the time it was over. i also watched half nelson last week. it was also really good and has some sweet songs in it, like a bunch of broken social scene. damn, i can't believe thursday is already march. i really need to find a job. some goals for this week are to paint, create some other art, take some photos, write some new songs and record them (1 is already in the works), read, watch my shows, job search, download/upload music onto the computer/ipod, and work out. i started to lift weights again. i haven't done it a year plus. i work out, but haven't had the desire to gain muscle cause i want to lose a few pounds, i mostly just do cardio, however i suppose i probably need to gain muscle to get rid of the fat. we'll see what happens. i'm finally feeling better, i basically have had a cold for the last 2+ weeks, it wasn't pleasant. ok i'm done

[ music | fold your eyes darling - the days are closer ]

man, i miss living at my college apartment with jimmy and kristi. i was just chatting with jimmy and it felt like we were chatting to eachother from 2 rooms away and i'm hungry and feel like ordering papa johns like we used to. it was actually only a year ago, which kind of seems odd. weird, like picturing it, doesn't like that long ago, but thinking about it seems like it was a long time ago. anyways, i got an application for sam ash and i applied to guitar center the other day. honestly i'd like working there more than an office or something, but i'm sure the pay won't be as good. who knows. i really don't know what to do with my life. i wish i could just keep living it like i am, except i wish i was living on my own. i like being independent. so i bought a saw and violin bow today. i cost me $50, which isn't terrible, but since i will probably be broke in 3 weeks, it's not good. i'm basically ready to record a new ep. i can't wait. i love being able to listen to my own songs as i fall asleep. i actually find it odd that i'm liking my own music as much as i am these days. where i heard like ray lamontagne can't even listen to his own music. i was like that when i was in a band, but now being solo, i'm able to do what i want, for the most part. i'm getting a lot of new music, which is cool. i'm filling up the ipod and the external hard-drive, such a long process, can't wait until i'm done and can actually be productive with something else. i've also been selling some cds through the mail, which is good, i guess. i need to start reading more and painting slash working on some other art projects, it makes me feel cool. i want to do some installations. welp i'm losing my train of thought. bye.

on a side note, fold your eyes darling, aka andrew kettering, inspires me greatly. he's a great singer-songwriter. he's written so much stuff. i've downloaded most of it about 66 songs. his stuff has inspired me to record everything i write from now on. yes, not everything song might not be amazing, of mine i mean, but it's still so cool to just be able to go back and listen to it or turn it into something else.

[ music | neutral milk hotel - holland, 1945 ]

i have some new tunes. two on banjo, one on guitar and it reminds me of some song i know but can't think of so it's driving me a little crazy, and i'm doing a daniel johnston cover. i want to record soon, but i still have my cold, so it's holding me back a little, but that's ok, i have a little more time to prepare these songs. i'm also planning to incorporate keyboard and a singing saw into these songs as well. should be interesting. i also found some videos on youtube of people playing a bike pump, it's kind of cool. maybe i'll try that as well. the weather was pretty nice today, i can't wait for spring. i want to sleep with the window open. i stopped by my summer job today. i kind of miss working there, however i don't think i'd like to work there full time. who knows what i'll end up doing, but i might work there this summer if i don't find a decent job.
